(It could have been us)

Film graphics and poster for the documentary Det kunde varit vi (English title: It Could Have Been Us), released in Swedish cinemas in October 2024. The typographic concept and treatment are inspired by early 20th-century books and archival documents from the institutions where events portrayed in the film originally unfolded.

Plot
In the beginning of the 20th century, thousands of people with intellectual disabilities were separated from their families and placed in institutions, isolated from society. Who were these people, and what happened to them?

It could have been us is a winding journey through darkness and light, whitin the little things and the big questions. This is a story of rectification, told by Emma and Ida, two friends who were both born with disabilities but even more courage and zest for life.

In an old but charming camper, they set off on a historic journey together with their friend and mentor Pär to find out what it was like to live with an intellectual disability in another time.
